scalp therapy treatmentsIf you have been recently struggling with thinning hair or hair loss, you’ve likely sifted through dozens of web pages discussing various treatments claiming to regrow your hair (often with very little explanation of how the process works). Sure, there are some treatments that can reverse hair loss, while others have less than enviable side effects or ingredients that can irritate the scalp. In our experience, laser hair therapy is an effective non-surgical hair loss treatment and has thus far been shown to have a positive effect on decelerating the effects of hair loss.

Laser hair loss treatment therapy is cleared by the FDA, recognized as an option for men and women with certain kinds of hair loss. Usually, the treatments are best suited for men and women who are seeking to grow hair and slow hair loss. It is also referred to as low level laser therapy (LLLT), soft laser, red light therapy, cold laser and bio-stimulation.

This form of therapy is a potential hair replacement strategy for men and women suffering from androgenetic alopecia, or genetic pattern baldness or thinning hair. If you are a man, you may notice a deciding hairline or vertex baldness; on the other hand, if you are a woman, hair loss more commonly appears as diffuse thinning of hair.

Do Laser Hair Treatments Work for all Hair Loss Sufferers?

Before we get started, it’s important to note that this therapy method unfortunately isn’t suitable for every person suffering from hair loss — it’s important that you consult with your doctor or a trained specialist before you spend money on a a treatment or device you can use at home.

At the end of the day, we want to make sure that both men and women are comfortable in their own body with a set of locks that they love. Here’s why it’s important to speak with a specialist or doctor before you decide on a treatment— if a thyroid issue or iron deficiency is the root of your hair loss, laser treatment won’t be able to combat this.

Laser hair therapy is primarily indicated to treat hair loss that’s caused by genetics (e.g. male pattern baldness or androgenetic alopecia).

Who is a Good Fit for Laser Hair Therapy Treatments?

We speak with men and women daily, helping to assess their chances of success in stopping the progression of hair loss, helping them regrow their hair, or providing viable hair replacement solutions. Laser hair therapy cannot revive a dead hair follicle, so unfortunately, completely bald areas do not respond to any form treatment. Simply put, you can’t grow hair from nothing.  So the earlier you take action the better, because laser hair therapy has been proven to work if there are still hair follicles to work with.

That being said, laser hair therapy may be a suitable option for men and women who are already using other hair replacement methods. There has been documented success in treating illness-related hair loss, postpartum hair loss and post-menopausal hair loss, and stress-related hair loss (telogen effluvium) as well as the most common androgenetic alopecia. Even covid-19 related hair loss where severe stress has been placed on a person’s nervous system.

How Long Does It Take for Noticeable Results?

Studies have indicated that laser hair therapy treatments yield results after different periods of time, depending on the individual. However, on average our clients have seen results around 20-26 weeks after starting treatments. That being said, the results on varying areas of the scalp can differ. Treatment can potentially work well on one area of the scalp, but there is also a small likelihood that the treatment will not work as well on other areas — this highlights the importance of undergoing routine treatment.

Consistency is Key for Success

Consistency is a main caveat associated with laser hair therapy treatments. When using laser therapy for hair loss or other scalp issues, it’s important that you stay on top of your sessions. Laser hair therapy may be performed in a salon by professionals trained in its administration, or at home. We typically recommend 2-3 times weekly treatments, which consist of approximately 30 minutes exposure of the scalp to light-emitting diodes under a head cap.

Laser hair loss treatment therapy is most effective, as mentioned earlier, during the initial stages of hair loss — the earlier you start therapy, the higher your chances for success. Unfortunately, the treatment is not a one-size-fits-all solution and it is critical that you understand the type of hair loss you are experiencing prior to purchasing a laser therapy package or device from a hair restoration studio or clinic.
