What are the causes of hair loss?

There are many myths and fables about why men and women lose their hair.  One of the most popular scapegoats has been hats.  "I lost my hair because I've worn a hat for as long as I can remember."  Unfortunately, it's not true nor is it that easy to place the blame.

Some people lose their hair as a result of stress or an injury.  Some because of medication or diet, while many attribute hair loss solely to heredity.  Why do some men and women lose their hair as early as their teens and others retain a thick, full head of hair into their 70's and 80's?  The gene that controls hair growth has only recently been identified.  Unfortunately, science still has not been able to discover the exact cause of hair loss.

Statistical science, however, will confirm that four out of ten men and one out of ten women will have some form of hair loss.

Topical Treatments

Minoxidil

Minoxidil has been called the "Miracle Drug" of hair growth.  In fact, some articles claim it is the only proven way to grow new hair.  Minoxidil, a prescription drug, was originally developed for people with high blood pressure.  Soon after it went on the market, heart patients who were prescribed the drug reported hair growth on their faces.  Upjohn capitalized on this side effect and promptly began marketing Minoxidil under the name Rogain, which is now available without a prescription.

Rogaine

There are a few facts you should know about this "Miracle drug."

  • Minoxidil has many side effects which the manufacturer recognizes and is obligated to warn you about.  They include severe scalp irritation, signs of severe indigestions, new or worsening pain in the arms, chest or shoulders, blurred vision, dizziness, light-headedness or fainting, and swelling or puffiness of the hands, face and ankles.
  • If you stop using Minoxidil, you will most likely lose any hair you may have grown while on this drug
  • A nationwide, year-long study in the USA, conducted by Upjohn, reports that 39% of the men using it had "moderate to dense hair re-growth."  However, a respected British medical journal reports "less than 10% of the men treated with Minoxidil obtained a result that a neutral observer may find cosmetically acceptable."
Over the years, men and women have spent millions of dollars on countless elixirs, creams, sprays and lotions that promise to grow hair or make that bald spot miraculously disappear.  On July 7th 1989, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned the sale of all over-the-counter products claiming to grow hair.  Why?  They simply don't work.

Toupees and Wigs

Everyone has seen a bad wig or toupee.  Some are so obvious you can spot them a mile away.  Unfortunately, many people wrongly believe these are the only type available and decide they would rather be bald than wear one of those "bad rugs."  The good news, however, is that not all toupees or hairpieces are bad.  You can actually purchase a reasonably "undetectable" hairpiece if you're prepared to spend some money.  So please, don't let these "wearers" stop you from doing something about your hair loss.

Hair Weaves

Weaves are created by weaving hair in lines or rows.  This results in a bulky, unnatural look that can be uncomfortable and sometimes un-hygienic.  Hair weave styles often require a great deal of hair spray and completely limit your recreational activities.

Surgical Procedures

Sutures

Through a surgical procedure, a suture, or thread is implanted into balding or thinning areas of your scalp.  Then, wefts of hair or a hair piece is sewn onto these threads.  Medical professionals consider this procedure highly radical and it has been banned in some parts of the United States.

Scalp Reductions

Only a small percentage of people, those with a small bald spot in the crown of their head, are considered good candidates for a surgical scalp reduction.  The procedure involves completely removing a portion of the scalp and then stretching and suturing skin over this area.  Unfortunately, you frequently need more than one scalp reduction and the procedure may leave a thin scar which may require hair grafts to camouflage.

Plugs

Plugs are the oldest form of hair transplants, but there are some doctors who will still perform this type of surgery.

In this procedure, a round, drill-like instrument is used to remove hair bearing follicles from the back of your head and then transplanting them to balding areas.  While successful in placing hair bearing pieces of scalp in your balding areas, you are also thinning your hair by integrating balding scalp into hair laden areas.

Micro Grafting

This surgical procedure is the most advanced form of transplant.  A row of hair bearing skin is taken from the donor area leaving behind a very thin hairline scar--which is easily covered by your own hair.  The row of hair bearing skin is then cut into mini and micro grafts.  These grafts are then placed into small, "paper cut" incisions which have been made in the balding area.  There is almost no scarring, and since each graft has only one to five hairs in it, the appearance is as natural as your own growing hair.

Note of Caution Regarding Surgical Procedures!

If you're thinking of investigating any of the above surgical procedures, please contact us for a personal consultation.  We'll analyze your particular hair loss condition and recommend you to an experienced, highly-qualified physician for that particular need.

A New, Safe Approach
Your First Step

Click the link at the bottom of this page to complete your virtual consultation. and one of our hair replacement specialists will contact you to arrange for your free, no obligation consultation.  During your first visit, we'll take time to discuss all of your options and answer any questions you may have.  We'll examine your scalp and determine which procedure we feel is best suited for your particular lifestyle.

You're under no obligation, but if you decide to take control of your hair loss problem, our next step is to take a measurement of the balding area needing hair.  We then take a hair sample of your own existing hair so that we can match the color, density, wave pattern and texture.

Special consideration will be given to your height, age, weight, personality, career and lifestyle.  Our expert design consultants may recommend strands of gray or highlights.  Your new hair is guaranteed to look, feel and act just like your own existing hair.

Genetic Follicle Matching

Contrary to popular belief, color is not the only criteria to which hair is matched.  While this is undoubtedly important, it is only the beginning.  To ensure that the hair we restore exactly duplicates your own, we analyze your growing hair for color, texture, thickness, elasticity, wave and curl patterns as well as lesser known factors such as cortex, cuticle formation and light refraction.  Only then can we be certain that under all circumstances, your new hair will look, blend and feel just like your very own.

Front Hairline Re-creation
Using advanced technology and artistry, we will expertly restore a totally natural front hairline.  We use just the right amount of fine hairs of different densities that blend softly into the forehead, creating a soft, unnoticeable transition from receding or thinning hair to correctly dense frontal hair.  This ensures that your hairline is naturally and aesthetically perfect.

Design and Finish
After your hair has been restored by our advanced professional design team, we will then determine the length and style that flatters and enhances your facial features as well as lifestyle.

Our award winning stylists will sculpt, blend and create a "look" that is totally natural and designed especially for you.  Whether your preference is short and conservative, carefree and easy, combed straight back, high fashioned or anything in between, the only limitation we are bound to....is your imagination.
